Foundation WAMSI Chairman inducted into the WA Science Hall of Fame

WAMSI's Foundation Chairman, Dr Bernard Bowen, was last night inducted into the WA Science Hall of Fame at the WA Science Awards Gala Dinner.

PhD Scholarship, Evaluation of Environmental Assessment using Airborne Sensing Technology

Applications are invited for an attractively supported PhD scholarship that will use historical and current field data together with high spatial resolution airborne hyperspectral imagery, multispectral imagery, terrain and vegetation mapping LIDAR and high resolution digital photography to investigate the distribution and condition of vegetation cover on a coastal site managed by the Port Hedl

Scientists are studying the impact of a massive influx of fresh water and sediment to Shark Bay in Western Australia as a result of the area’s largest ever flood event recorded in December last year.

Shark Bay was declared a World Heritage Area in 1991, and has the distinction of being one of the few places in the world that satisfies all criteria for World Heritage listing.

CSIRO scientists visit KMRS

In August 2011, three scientists from CSIRO visited the Kimberley Marine Research Station at Cygnet Bay.

UNESCO IOC Perth and IMarEST Western Australian Marine Studies Awards

Invitations from students are on offer to submit Abstracts for the 2011 Awards.

There are three categories:-

1. Western Australian 'post graduate' marine science
2. Western Australian 'under-graduate' marine science
3. Fremantle Maritime Training Center students

Cash prizes are on offer.

Better Science, Better Decisions

The WAMSI 1 Conference was conducted on 19 & 20 September 2011 at the WA Maritime Museum in Fremantle with 200 people attending. The Conference was split into two parallel sessions over the two days with over 60 talks given on the WAMSI research undertaken between 2006 – 2011.

Data Interrogation and Visualisation Environment (DIVE)

DIVE is a data visualisation and data access tool developed for, but not limited to, geographically localised, temporally and spatially varying data. It specifically targets the visualisation of multidisciplinary data and multidimensional data. DIVE runs on Windows, Linux and Mac OSX computers.

On the 15th August 2011 WAMSI commenced its humpback whale boat based survey for 2011. This follows previous boat based studies in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

WA fishery researcher honoured

Rod Lenanton has been a fisherman ever since his dad started taking him out in search of dhufish and snapper off WA as a nipper.

Now 67, he's been awarded the Brownlow Medal of marine science for a lifetime of excellence in fish and fisheries research.
